Baclofen

baclofen Displayed: baclofen lioresal 10mg

A muscle relaxant drug that works on the central nervous system, especially in instances of spinal cord injury. The drug relieves the spasm, cramping, and rigidity caused by a variety of disorders. Which includes multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. The drug is also used to treat the spasticity that results from brain injury, cerebral palsy, or stroke. Baclofen increases movement, allowing other treatment such as physiotherapy, to be carried out. Baclofen is less likely to cause muscle weakness than similar drugs, and its side effects, such as dizziness or drowsiness, are usually only a temporary state. Elderly people are more susceptible to side effects, especially during the early stages of treatment. A very beneficial property of baclofen is that tolerance does not seem to occur to any significant degree in that baclofen retains its therapeutic anti-spasmodic effects even after many years of chronic use.

Does Baclofen affect female hormone levels in any way?

    • The Medibolism Team said on Apr 08, 2010 at 2:00 pm

There is research to prove that Baclofen may decrease the effectiveness of Oestrogen. There is also research that seems to suggest that Oestrogen receptors are developing immunity to the effects of drugs such as Baclofen. Please remember that this answer is based on research and is subject to change with newer research.

      Baclofen may be used for:

the relief of spasms, cramping and tightness of muscles caused by illnesses such as cerebral palsy, diseases of the spinal cord, meningitis, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and other injuries or diseases which affect the brain and nervous system.

The main long term risk associated with centrally acting muscle relaxants is that the body can become dependant on them and centrally acting drugs can have a generally depressant effect on nervous activity and produce drowsiness.

Any medicine may cause side effects, but the vast majority of individuals have either slight side effects or don’t have any at all. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects from the list below persist or start bothering you:

Feeling sick, changes in passing water, tiredness, confusion, disturbed speech, dizziness, co-ordination problems, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), nightmares, headaches, problems sleeping, depression, anxiety, agitation, shakiness, squinting of the eyes, pins and needles, fits, muscle pain, fever, slowing down of the heart and breathing, dry mouth, upset tummy, sexual problems, problems seeing, itching or skin rash, mood changes, changes in taste.
