Fluoxetine belongs to a relatively new group of drugs called specific serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for short. It is used for the treatment of major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa and panic disorder. Medication of this kind and other similar drugs tend to cause less sedation and have fewer side effects than older antidepressants. Fluoxetine is said to relieve moodiness, increase the patients physical activity, and restore interest in everyday life. Flouxetine is broken down slowly because of this it will stay in the body up to several weeks after treatment has been stopped. As well as being used as a antidepressant it is also administered to reduce binge eating and purging activity (Bulimia Nervosa). Fluoxtine is also used in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Despite the availability of newer agents, Wikipedia reports that it remains extremely popular. Over 22.2 million prescriptions for generic formulations of fluoxetine were filled in the United States in 2007, making it the third most prescribed antidepressant.
