Calpol Six Plus Suspension

The paracetamol in Calpol Six Plus Suspension is used to relieve pain and as antipyretics (reduce body temperature, fever) and bring down a fever (high temperature) Calpol Six Plus Sugar Free Suspension is An off-white oral suspension with an odour of strawberries. and is suitable for most individuals over the age of six years. It is also suitable for adults who have difficulty in swallowing tablets. However, there are some people who should not take this medication, if you are in any doubt you should speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Calpol Six Plus Suspension Liquid contains:
    Methyl (218) and propyl (E216), parahydroxybenoate. The sorbitol (E420) and maltitol content of Calpol means that this medicine is unsuitable for individuals with inherited intolerance to fructose. Maltitol may have a mild laxative effect. The active ingredient is: paracetamol 250mg per 5ml.

Directions for use: Always shake the bottle thoroughly before use. Children 6 to 16 years of age one to two 5ml spoonfuls every four hours. Adults and children over 12 years of age two to four 5ml spoonfuls every four hours. A 5ml spoon is supplied with the medicine.

Side Effects

Rare: Skin rashes and any other alergy problems, Unusual tiredness or Lethargy, Bruising or Bleeding, Diarrhoea, Breathing difficulties.

These side-effects are rare in people taking Calpol (paracetamol). If you or your child notice any of the above problems stop giving Calpol (paracetamol). Tell your doctor as soon as possible. Do not give Calpol until you recieve medical advise.

Prolonged Use

Using medicine with paracetamol as part of an ingredient, over a prolonged period, could lead to problems such as: Liver and kidney damage. However, individuals taking paracetamol in the usual way over short periods of time have not had these problems.

Driving, Hazardous Work & Alcohol

Taking paracetamol or paracetamol based medicines would not cause a problem. However, Taking large amounts of alcohol may leave you open to the side-effects of paracetamol.

Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding

You should speak with your doctor before taking this medication. The safe use of Calpol during pregnancy has not been established directly. With regard to evidence-based medicine which identify the risk of varoius drugs paracetamol, taken as recommended, is conciderd safe in pregnancy or breast feeding.

Tell Your Doctor or Pharmacist

You should tell your doctor if you have a current health problem. For example: heart disease, kidney problems, if you are pregnant or you intend to become pregnant, or if you think you may be at risk from drug treatment for any other reason. Some types of medication can cause serious adverse effects when taken side by side so it is important to tell your doctor of any other medication you are already taking. This should also include any over-the-counter medication. For example: Painkillers, cold remedies, herbal and complimentary / alternative medication.

Over 60’s & Children

Adults can take this medication. This medicine is not recommended for children below the age of 6 years.

Overdose

Paracetamol is well tolerated when taken at the usual recommended dosages. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose. This will still apply even if your child seems well, this is because there is a possibillity of seriously delayed liver damage. Early frequent signs of overdose include: Pallor, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. Liver damage has been reported after daily ingestion of excessive amounts for short periods of time.

Other Medication Reactions

You need to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking metoclopramide or domperidone (used to treat nausea and vomiting). Cholestyramine (used to treat high cholesterol). Anticoagulants (drugs that thin your blood, for example: warfarin). Anticonvulsants (drugs to treat epilepsy). Using the contraceptive pill may also prevent you from recieving the full benefits of Calpol.

Missed A Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember provided it has been 4 hours or more since your last dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Reducing or Stopping Medication

When ever you nolonger need it. Speak to your doctor if you need to take this medication for more than 3 days. This is because your illness may need medication of another kind.

Effect Of Medication (from one dose)

Like most paracetamol or paracetamol based medicines relief may be felt within 30 minutes.

Storage and Safety

  • Keep medicine in its original container, in a cool dry place, away from the reach and eye sight of children.
  • Do not store medication above a temperature of 25°C.
  • Never take more than the original dosage whether prescribed by your doctor or recommended by the manafactures.
  • Never take medication that has past the expiry date shown on the box or container.
  • Do not discard old or unwanted medication / drugs into your trash, sink or toilet.
  • Return all unused or old medicines / drugs to your pharmacist.

If this medication has been prescribed for you never allow anyone else to use it, even if you know or they feel their symptom are similar to your own.

Do not leave your doctors surgery until you have a clear understanding of what the drug your doctor has prescribed for you does, and why you have been prescribed it. It is common for people who do not understand the reason behind there treatment to take their medication correctly.

  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • If you have serious liver or kidney problems.
  • If you or your child have an inherited intolerance to fructose or has been diagnosed with an intolerance to some other sugars.
  • If the adult or child has ever had a bad reaction to any of the ingredients, or any other paracetamol based medication. (example paracetamol)
  • If you or your child are taking any other medicines with paracetamol in it.
  • This medication should be avoided if you suffer severe hepatic or renal dysfunction.
  • If you are taking any other medication (including herbal/alternative/complementary medicine, and those bought over the counter).
