Formoterol works by opening up the air passages in the lungs so that air can flow into the lungs more freely. In doing so it helps to relieve symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Here is the connection it has with obesity.
Lead author Dr. Paul Lee, of Melbourne’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Australia, found that Formoterol used to treat asthma patients has also been found to increase metabolism and fat burning in adults who are at rest. It is reported to burn off an extra 200 calories a day by taking the medication.
The author Dr. Paul Lee said: “Energy rate was increased by 10% and fat burning was increased by close to 25%.”
He went on to say “This is an important discovery as it suggests that Formoterol may be used to treat obesity” There are other medications that raise the metabolism but these also bring with them a risk of the increased heart rate which can become rather dangerous to the user.
Formoterol has been in use for some ten years and in research proved to have no effect on the heart. Dr. Lee called for a larger study to be carried out.
